China and Thailand’s Hydrogen Collaboration

Thailand is on the brink of ushering in its inaugural commercial green hydrogen venture, forging a strategic partnership with Beijing Mingyang Hydrogen Technology Co Ltd, a prominent Chinese new energy company.

The collaboration aims to propel Thailand into a realm of green and low-carbon practices, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s transition towards sustainable energy.

In a landmark agreement signed on Friday, Beijing Mingyang Hydrogen and Thailand’s premier liquefied natural gas distributor, IBCLNG Co Ltd, pledged to develop a 25-MW electrolysis project jointly. The deal encompasses IBCLNG sourcing advanced electrolyzers from Mingyang Hydrogen, which will contribute technical expertise and personnel support to construct an integrated green hydrogen infrastructure in Thailand.

The envisioned infrastructure covers the entire spectrum of “generation, storage, and utilization” of green hydrogen. The output from this collaboration will be directed to steel enterprises, fostering the production of environmentally friendly steel, thereby curbing carbon footprints and bolstering production sustainability.

Charernsook Siriyong, IBCLNG’s deputy managing director, emphasized the significance of hydrogen as a clean and versatile secondary energy source, playing a pivotal role in the global energy transition. Thailand’s current reliance on gray hydrogen, derived from fossil fuel combustion or industrial by-products, necessitates a shift towards green hydrogen produced through water electrolysis using renewable energy sources like wind, hydropower, and solar.

Siriyong highlighted the European Union’s implementation of a carbon border adjustment mechanism, imposing “carbon tariffs” on select products. Thailand’s transition to green hydrogen becomes imperative to mitigate potential future export costs and secure a first-mover advantage.

Shen Zhongmin, vice chairman of Mingyang Hydrogen, underscored the role of hydrogen as a major source of green energy. He emphasized that the collaboration extends beyond selling products, serving as a high-quality international cooperation solution for climate change.
