OX2 and Ingka Investments, the investment arm of the Ingka Group (IKEA’s largest retailer), are set to submit an application for a pioneering offshore wind-to-hydrogen project off the coast of Gotland, Sweden.

This comes on the heels of their recent application for the Neptunus project in Blekinge. The ambitious initiatives signify a significant leap in Sweden’s commitment to green hydrogen production and offshore wind energy integration.

The primary objective of these projects is to establish offshore energy hubs that seamlessly integrate wind energy and green hydrogen production. The Neptunus project, located 50 kilometers off the south coast of Sweden, aims to feature up to 207 wind turbines with a combined capacity of 3.1 GW. The comprehensive energy hub includes plans for offshore hydrogen production and a groundbreaking pilot project to oxygenate the Baltic Sea. If permits are granted, construction is slated to commence in 2030, marking a crucial step towards Sweden’s renewable energy goals.

The Pleione energy park, the second project, situated 37 kilometers east of Gotland, is a pivotal component of OX2 and Ingka Investments’ collaborative vision. Part of a strategic partnership formed in 2023, the Pleione energy park is designed to house a 1 GW offshore wind farm, featuring 42-70 wind turbines. The project also envisions dedicated platforms or utilizing wind turbine foundations for hydrogen production plants, presenting a multifaceted approach to sustainable energy generation.

Both projects leverage advanced offshore wind technology to harness the power of the wind for electricity generation. The proposed wind farms are poised to utilize cutting-edge turbines, contributing to a significant boost in Sweden’s renewable energy capacity. The integration of green hydrogen production involves deploying electrolysis technology, allowing for the conversion of excess wind energy into hydrogen. These technologies align with the global push for cleaner energy alternatives and sustainable practices.

The Neptunus and Pleione projects hold immense potential to revolutionize Sweden’s energy landscape. By combining offshore wind energy with green hydrogen production, these initiatives address the dual challenges of renewable electricity generation and hydrogen fuel production. The resulting impact could lead to a substantial reduction in carbon emissions, positioning Sweden as a frontrunner in the race towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly energy sector.
