Italian high school adds green hydrogen boiler

In the EU’s educational system, the first green hydrogen-powered boiler was installed in the Antonio Meucci high school in Carpi, Italy. This ground-breaking project, launched by Coopservice on January 20, 2023, uses solar energy to power the chemical process of electrolysis, which splits water into oxygen and hydrogen. The end result is a zero-emission heating source for the winter. The effectiveness of green hydrogen in comparison to electric heat pumps for household heating is a topic of contention among specialists, despite its potential to reduce CO2 emissions by 717 tons per year.

2024 Hydrogen Awards winners unveiled

The 2024 Hydrogen Awards winners were announced at a ceremony held at Keele University in the United Kingdom on Tuesday, February 27.

Companies, organizations, and academic institutions were honored for their efforts along the hydrogen value chain in the areas of transportation, power, storage and distribution, production, training, marketing, and communications, among other areas.

The Gold Outstanding Achievement prize and the Production prize went to UK-based firm Johnson Matthey.

Smoltek enhances efficiency in electrochemical cells with new patents

Smoltek Nanotech Holding AB has recently secured three new patents focusing on reducing contact resistance in electrolyzer and fuel cells. These patents mark a significant milestone for the company, expanding its intellectual property (IP) portfolio to a total of 87 granted patents across various innovative technologies. The new patents introduce novel methods to address the challenge of high contact resistance within electrochemical cells, particularly in electrolyzers and fuel cells.

CAA selects three companies to participate in Hydrogen Challenge Sandbox

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has recently announced the selection of three companies to participate in the Hydrogen Challenge Sandbox, a program aimed at enhancing industry and regulatory preparedness for the adoption of hydrogen fuel and associated technologies in aviation. The chosen companies include Cranfield Aerospace Solutions, Exeter Airport Consortium, and ZeroAvia.

Initiated in November 2023 with support from the Regulator’s Pioneer Fund, the Hydrogen Challenge seeks to explore the potential of hydrogen as a zero-emission aviation fuel. Cranfield Aerospace Solutions, one of the selected firms, is focusing on developing a hydrogen fuel cell drivetrain for aircraft, with plans to conduct ground tests and flight trials within the year. This endeavor aligns with the broader goal of transitioning to more sustainable aviation practices.

GCK Mobility hydrogen-retrofitted coach ready for series manufacture

Validated by UTAC and CNRV, GCK Mobility has obtained a certificate for the first homologation of a hydrogen-retrofitted coach for series manufacture. With a 500 km range and a 15–20 minute recharge period, the Iveco Crossway NF 80 is equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell in the engine compartment to power electric motor batteries. This accomplishment represents a first for the globe and shows that GCK Mobility can produce large quantities of goods legally. The modified Iveco Crossway NF 80 is touted to be mass-producible and road-legal.

A deal has been inked by Forvia and Air Liquide with FAW Jiefang, a company in China, to install liquid hydrogen storage systems in heavy-duty trucks. They said that the agreement will enable the two French businesses to focus on the Chinese market.
