Gas equipment manufacturer Chart Industries and shipowner GasLog have joined forces to pioneer the development of a commercial-scale liquid hydrogen (LH2) supply chain.

The primary objective of the partnership between Chart Industries and GasLog is to establish a robust and efficient supply chain for liquid hydrogen on a commercial scale. By combining GasLog’s innovative liquid hydrogen vessel technology with Chart’s extensive experience in cryogenic systems, the collaboration seeks to facilitate the seamless transportation of LH2 from export markets in the Middle East to destinations in Europe and Asia. This initiative aligns with the growing global demand for clean energy alternatives and represents a crucial step towards reducing carbon emissions and mitigating climate change.

GasLog’s latest development, the Susio Frontier, stands as a groundbreaking achievement in the realm of liquid hydrogen transportation. With a capacity of 1,250 cubic meters, the Susio Frontier is currently the only vessel specifically designed to carry liquefied hydrogen. This state-of-the-art vessel showcases GasLog’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, providing a platform for the efficient and safe transportation of LH2 across international waters.

Chart Industries, renowned for its expertise in cryogenics and liquefaction solutions, brings invaluable knowledge and technology to the partnership. Drawing on years of experience in designing and implementing large-scale liquefaction facilities, Chart is poised to play a pivotal role in optimizing the LH2 supply chain, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and safety throughout the distribution process.

The collaboration between Chart Industries and GasLog holds immense potential to transform the global energy landscape. As the world seeks to transition away from fossil fuels and embrace renewable energy sources, liquid hydrogen emerges as a key player in the quest for sustainability. By enabling the efficient transport of LH2 from production hubs to end users across continents, the partnership has the power to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen as a clean, versatile, and environmentally friendly energy carrier.

The establishment of a commercial-scale LH2 supply chain signifies a significant milestone in the journey towards decarbonization. With LH2 poised to play a pivotal role in sectors such as transportation, industry, and power generation, the partnership between Chart Industries and GasLog has the potential to drive substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, promote economic growth, and foster technological innovation on a global scale.
