Pacific Energy Acquires Canberra’s Hydrogen Refuelling Station

Pacific Energy has acquired the Canberra Hydrogen Refuelling Facility from ActewAGL. The facility, located in Fyshwick, Canberra, was the first public hydrogen refuelling station in Australia, launched in 2021.

The acquisition aligns with Pacific Energy’s strategy to develop the mobility ecosystem by providing reliable and innovative hydrogen solutions. It also symbolizes its first investment in hydrogen infrastructure and strengthens its portfolio of energy assets.

The facility, originally designed and constructed by Pacific Energy’s subsidiary, ENGV, attests to the company’s innovative culture and in-house capabilities. It also showcases the abilities of its equipment partners, NEL, PDC Machines, and IVYS Energy Solutions.

Since its establishment, the station has been instrumental in propelling Canberra’s hydrogen mobility journey. The station serves a growing fleet of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs), with the ACT Government being its key client. Other customers include Woodside Energy, the Korean Embassy, and vehicle manufacturers like Hyundai and Toyota.

Pacific Energy’s CEO, Jamie Cullen, underlined the company’s commitment to growing ACT’s green hydrogen ecosystem by keeping the station open for car refuelling. He noted the acquisition fits the company’s objective of being a leading infrastructure provider in the hydrogen sector.

Cullen acknowledged their continued support for the ACT Government’s mission to decarbonise transportation and their focus on expanding the territory’s FCEV fleet options. Pacific Energy, backed by the ACT Government’s goal to achieve 80-90% new light vehicle sales being zero emissions by 2030, is strategically investing in hydrogen refuelling stations.

Pacific Energy teamed up with Hyundai, Toyota, and Ampol in late 2023 to co-develop hydrogen refuelling infrastructure in the ACT. The ACT Government, an early adopter of hydrogen mobility, continues to support these initiatives, highlighting its role in creating a clean energy future.

Fiona Wright, ACT’s Deputy Director General, stated that decarbonising the ACT transport sector is part of their net zero commitment by 2045. She underscored the essential role of the Canberra Hydrogen Refuelling Station in meeting future demand for hydrogen fuel.

The facility’s ownership transitioned from ActewAGL to Pacific Energy at the beginning of April, with Pacific Energy now fully owning and operating the station.
