A new patent filed by SHPP Global Technologies B.V. introduces an innovative material for hydrogen storage: a capped polyindane oligomer.

This patent, filed on May 30, 2024, outlines a novel approach to improving hydrogen storage technologies, which are crucial for progressing in hydrogen fuel applications across various industries.

Features and Improvements

The capped polyindane oligomer is characterized by its distinct chemical structure, represented in the patent by formula (1). This structure includes various substituents like hydrogen, halogen, hydrocarbyl, hydrocarbylthio, hydrocarbyloxy, and halohydrocarbyloxy groups. The unique feature of this formulation is its ability to maintain stability and enhance hydrogen storage capacity without the drawbacks associated with tertiary hydrocarbyl groups.

Specifically, the capped polyindane oligomer displays enhanced thermal stability and hydrogen absorption-desorption characteristics, addressing significant issues in existing hydrogen storage materials. Traditional materials often suffer from degradation at high temperatures and inefficiency in hydrogen release, but the modifications introduced in this polymer structure mitigate these issues.
