Nikkiso Clean Energy & Industrial Gases Group, a division of Nikkiso Co. Ltd., has secured contracts to build and maintain approximately two dozen liquid hydrogen (LH2) fueling stations nationwide. This announcement follows a recent award by SK Plug Hyverse, underscoring Nikkiso’s critical role in advancing South Korea’s hydrogen infrastructure.

Advancing Hydrogen Infrastructure

As South Korea pursues its ambitious plans to reduce carbon emissions, the need for efficient and scalable hydrogen fueling infrastructure has become paramount. Liquid hydrogen offers a compelling solution for fleet operators, transit authorities, and agencies aiming to maintain long-distance driving capabilities while significantly lowering emissions. Nikkiso’s extensive experience developing cryogenic pumps and alternative fuel fueling stations positions it as a key partner in this transition.

Peter Wagner, CEO of Nikkiso Clean Energy & Industrial Gases, emphasized the importance of the partnership with SK Plug Hyverse. “SK Plug Hyverse is a tremendous partner for Nikkiso in South Korea because we bring exceptional capabilities and people to support South Korea’s progressive approach to establishing a competitive hydrogen economy. Nikkiso admires South Korea’s productive and pragmatic approach to scaling up the hydrogen economy, and we look forward to further opportunities supporting its efforts.”

Technological Excellence and Experience

Nikkiso’s vertically integrated approach to hydrogen fueling station development includes in-house liquefication systems, trailer loading systems, cryogenic pumps, vacuum-insulated pipes and vessels, cryogenic vaporizers, industrial controls, permitting installation, and maintenance services. This comprehensive capability set is a significant draw for partners like SK Plug Hyverse, seeking reliable and experienced collaborators to support the hydrogen economy.

Mike Mackey, President of Fueling & Solutions at Nikkiso Clean Energy & Industrial Gases, highlighted the company’s long-standing expertise. “There aren’t many companies that have Nikkiso’s vertically integrated fueling station with in-house liquefication systems and trailer loading systems, cryogenic pumps, vacuum insulated pipe, vacuum insulated vessels, cryogenic vaporizer, industrial controls, permitting installation, and maintenance services,” Mackey noted. “We’ve been building alternative fueling stations since 1998 and are proud that our work supports a cleaner, healthier world.”

Deployment and Impact

Several liquid hydrogen fueling stations have already been commissioned in South Korea, successfully fueling buses and ramping up to full capacity. The remaining stations will be online over the next 12 months, significantly enhancing the country’s hydrogen fueling infrastructure.

The deployment of these stations will facilitate the widespread adoption of hydrogen-powered buses and heavy-duty trucks, supporting South Korea’s goals for emission reductions and sustainable transportation. This initiative is part of a broader effort to establish a competitive hydrogen economy, leveraging advanced technologies and strategic partnerships to drive progress.
