Horizon-Indify to Build 1 GW Electrolyzer Plant in India

Horizon Fuel Cell Group and Indify Fuel Cell are partnering to set up a 1 GW electrolyzer factory in India. This joint venture aims to build assembly facilities capable of producing gigawatt-scale electrolyzers in two phases.

Production Timeline and Capacity

The plant will assemble at least 100 MW annually in the initial phase. The facility is expected to be fully operational by early 2026. HET Hydrogen, a Horizon Fuel Cell Group subsidiary, spearheads the project.

Proprietary Electrolyzers

HET Hydrogen has commercialized megawatt-scale Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzers and plans to introduce Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) electrolyzers. These systems are based on proprietary membrane and stack technology, offering competitive capital costs similar to traditional alkaline systems and lower operational costs than PEM systems.

Site Selection and Goals

Several potential locations for the factory have been identified, with final confirmation expected in the coming months. Indify aims to operationalize its first 1 MW HET electrolyzer in India by March 2025 for customer demonstrations and technical validation. The goal is to increase the Indian content in future systems to minimize the cost of producing green hydrogen.

Investments and Future Plans

The joint venture intends to invest in sectors like green steel, fertilizers, chemicals, sustainable fuels, and zero-emission heavy fuels. These investments aim to leverage India’s low-cost green hydrogen for the country’s future decarbonized economy.

Government Initiatives

In August 2024, the Solar Energy Corporation of India requested proposals for setting up green hydrogen hubs under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has also issued guidelines for incentive disbursements for producing up to 450,000 metric tons per annum of green hydrogen under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition program.
