CaetanoBus has delivered the first 10 electric hydrogen-powered buses to EMT Madrid by late December. These buses are now ready to begin operations in the Spanish capital.
The company has already sold over 200 fuel cell buses across Europe, including countries like Germany, France, Portugal, Italy, and soon Austria. In the first half of 2023, CaetanoBus claimed a significant 32% market share in the European hydrogen bus sector.
EMT Madrid is aiming to transition its entire fleet to zero emissions by 2030. The newly delivered buses, models of Caetano H2.City Gold, will be deployed on route 145. Each bus, fitted with a Toyota fuel cell module, boasts a range exceeding 500 kilometers. These vehicles can be refueled at the first public green hydrogen station in a European capital. This facility can fill a bus’s tank in less than 15 minutes using green hydrogen produced on-site with a PEN electrolyzer that generates 18 kg/h. The buses can reportedly operate up to 20 hours a day, ensuring long service hours for public transport.
Despite some doubts about hydrogen technology, these buses are essential for longer trips, serving as a viable alternative to purely battery-powered electric buses. This technology plays a critical role in decarbonizing large bus fleets, aligning with European climate goals. Nuno Lago de Carvalho, Chief Commercial Officer of CaetanoBus, highlighted Spain’s importance as a market. He expressed satisfaction in delivering the H2.City Gold units to EMT Madrid, emphasizing the significance of hydrogen mobility in reducing emissions and meeting European environmental targets.
