Koorangie Battery Boosts Australia’s Renewable Energy Landscape

Edify Energy’s 185 MW/370 MWh Koorangie Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has begun exporting electricity to the grid.

Situated in northwest Victoria, this project integrates cutting-edge Tesla Megapack batteries equipped with grid-forming inverter technology, heralding a new era for energy storage and stabilization. As the transition towards renewable energy accelerates, this development is critical in replacing system strength services traditionally dominated by fossil-fuel generators.

Grid-forming inverters, pivotal in this transition, enhance the hosting capacity of inverter-based resources like solar and wind power in the Murray River region by up to 300 MW. This technology is crucial as the Australian government eyes ambitious targets of 2.6 GW of energy storage by 2030 and 6.3 GW by 2035. These figures are projected to supply nearly half of Victoria’s homes with their peak energy demand if realized.

The economic and operational stability of the Koorangie BESS is ensured through a 20-year system support agreement with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). This agreement underscores the battery’s role in supplying 125 MW of grid system strength services—a crucial element in enhancing network stability. Furthermore, the project’s financial backbone is fortified through a 15-year electricity offtake agreement with Shell Energy Australia. Such partnerships underscore a well-orchestrated strategy to support and integrate renewable energy solutions effectively within Australia’s energy mix.

This project is not merely a symbol of technological advancement but also a testament to the burgeoning investor confidence in Australia’s energy transition. Sosteneo Infrastructure Partners, the Italian-backed entity owning the Koorangie project, marks its first foray into the Australian market, backed by Generali Investments. Sosteneo’s strategy, initiated in September 2023, has rapidly expanded its portfolio to over 4 GWh of battery storage across various continents, reflecting a robust commitment to greenfield infrastructure advancements.
