In its container terminal at the Port of Immingham, Associated British Ports (ABP) is the first port operator in the UK to test a tractor powered by hydrogen.

Following initial feasibility funding from the Department of Transport’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, this joint pilot project was funded by ORE Catapult through Innovate UK’s Hydrogen Innovation Initiative (HII). The Terberg hydrogen terminal tractor and an Air Products mobile hydrogen filling station were tested at the UK’s largest port by tonnage.

This demonstration represents a crucial milestone in the generation, delivery, and usage of hydrogen at the Port of Immingham as well as a crucial activity in the effort to decarbonize port operations. In order to assist the greater UK industry with the adoption of H2, HII is developing market, technology, and economic assessments of hydrogen technologies.

ABP, Terberg, Air Products, and the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult worked together on the project.
