On a road construction project close to Cadiz, the Spanish company Acciona is generating electricity on-site using a hydrogen fuel cell.
Since its installation in August, the S-series Power Tower from UK-based AFC Energy has produced more than 400kW/h of emission-free power during 300 hours of operation.
According to AFC, their fuel cell has now entirely taken the place of diesel generators on the project and has so far avoided the atmospheric release of an estimated 1.8 million tonnes of CO2. This is the first time such low-carbon hydrogen technology has been applied on a construction site in Europe, claims Acciona.
AFC’s Power Tower effectively follows loads to fulfill the fluctuating power requirements of the construction site. Through observation of the installation, more opportunities for system cost reduction and enhanced operational resilience and dependability have already been found.
