ACO Embraces Liquid Hydrogen In Racing

The Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) is making significant strides in advancing hydrogen technology in motor racing.

Its latest prototype, the H24EVO, is set to transition from using gaseous hydrogen to liquid hydrogen storage. This change marks a pivotal shift in the MissionH24 initiative.

Unveiled as a concept in late 2023 and showcased in full scale at the previous 24 Hours of Le Mans, the H24EVO initially intended to harness 7.8 kg of hydrogen stored at 700 bar pressure. This was to power its robust 300kW fuel cell. However, following the recent Hyvolution Paris exhibition, the FIA World Endurance Championship’s co-promoter announced that the vehicle would now employ liquid hydrogen, enhancing its development trajectory.

This shift to liquid hydrogen offers several advantages. It allows for storing between 11 to 14 kg of hydrogen, extending the car’s cruising range from the previous 25-30 minutes to a minimum of 40 minutes. Liquid hydrogen, essential for this new strategy, must be maintained at a chilling -253 degrees C (-423 degrees F). The system also requires a sophisticated evaporation and heat exchange setup to ensure efficient compatibility with the Symbio-supplied fuel cell.

The H24EVO aims to maintain a weight of 1300 kg while achieving a top speed of 340 km/h (211.3 mph), positioning it competitively among the best GT3 vehicles. ACO President Pierre Fillon emphasized the importance of this transition, noting that introducing liquid hydrogen into racing is both a competitive and environmental milestone, instrumental in achieving zero CO2 emissions in motorsports.

A revised timeline for the H24EVO’s development has been laid out. Bench testing with its powerful 650kW (872 hp) electric motor is set to begin in October, with assembly of the first complete model planned for February 2026. A significant track test is anticipated by April 2026.
