Active Venting Control System for Liquid Hydrogen Tanks

The newly filed patent by Universal Hydrogen Co. introduces an innovative active venting control system specifically designed for liquid hydrogen tanks.

This system stands out due to its ability to allow a greater mass of hydrogen to be safely stored over extended periods. By efficiently managing both pressure and fill levels within the tank, the system ensures heightened safety and performance compared to traditional methods.

One of the key features of this active venting control system is its capability to closely monitor and manage the hydrogen conditions inside the tank. The system is engineered to vigilantly observe pressure levels, ensuring they remain within safe limits. Furthermore, it is designed to continuously assess the fill level of the tank. This dual-monitoring approach ensures that both pressure and quantity are controlled optimally.

The automation of the venting process is a significant advancement presented in this patent. When a tank achieves a predetermined fill level, the venting system automatically becomes active, releasing pressure for a set duration. This automatic venting is crucial in maintaining the balance necessary for safe hydrogen storage. The repetition of this process during transit and storage allows tanks to be initially filled to higher levels, ultimately holding more hydrogen than would be possible with passive systems.

Traditional passive pressure systems have certain limitations which this active venting system aims to overcome. Passive systems generally permit a lesser initial fill level and, subsequently, less hydrogen storage. In contrast, the active system not only allows a higher initial fill but also maintains safe pressure throughout the storage timeframe. This innovation is especially beneficial for industries and applications that rely on liquid hydrogen as an energy source, offering enhanced storage capabilities and improved safety measures.
