To establish a green hydrogen facility and a green ammonia pilot project in the Republic of Uzbekistan, ACWA Power has signed detailed heads of terms agreements with the nation’s Ministry of Energy and Uzkimyosanoat, a state-owned chemical corporation.

These initiatives are the first of their sort in the nation of Central Asia. The country’s first integrated green hydrogen project, to be built near Chirchiq, 45 kilometers from the capital Tashkent, will be coupled to an existing ammonia factory. 3,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year are anticipated to be produced by the project.

The project to convert this current infrastructure to green hydrogen will be overseen by ACWA Power, and it is anticipated that this will increase the facility’s service factor and lessen its reliance on natural gas. The facility is expected to be completed in December 2024, according to the company’s plans, which call for an accelerated development schedule.

The creation of a feasibility study for the production of 500,000 tonnes of green ammonia is the second project. This project is anticipated to reduce Uzbekistan’s reliance on natural gas by 600 million cubic meters annually, which will result in a 1.5 million ton reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. By the end of next year, the study will be completed.

ACWA Power also has five active projects in Uzbekistan, including four wind projects and a combined gas cycle turbine facility, in addition to these green hydrogen and green ammonia projects. In terms of value, it ranks second only to Saudi Arabia, the company’s home market, in importance.
