Adani Total Gas Ltd. (ATGL), a key player in the energy and city gas distribution sector, has announced the launch of a ‘Green Hydrogen Blending Pilot Project.’ Co-promoted by the Adani Group and TotalEnergies, this initiative marks a significant stride in the adoption of green hydrogen in India.
The primary goal of the project is to harness cutting-edge technologies to blend Green Hydrogen (GH2) with natural gas, catering to the energy needs of over 4,000 residential and commercial customers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. GH2, produced through water electrolysis using electricity from renewable sources, aligns with India’s push for energy independence and sustainability.
Green hydrogen, the focal point of this initiative, is produced by the electrolysis of water, powered by electricity generated from renewable sources. The blending process involves integrating GH2 with natural gas, providing a cleaner and more sustainable alternative without compromising heating capabilities. This technology represents a crucial step in reducing carbon intensity in the gas distribution sector.
By commissioning the project in Q1 FY24-25, ATGL aims to gradually increase the percentage of green hydrogen in the blend, reaching up to 8% or more, contingent upon regulatory approvals. The successful completion of the pilot phase will pave the way for wider adoption, extending the supply of hydrogen-blended fuel to larger parts of Ahmedabad and other licensed areas of ATGL.
