Amogy and Ballard Power Systems have a deal for the sale of fuel cell engines for use in ammonia-to-power maritime applications.

In accordance with the terms of the agreement, Amogy will buy a first batch of three 200kW FCwave engines, and Ballard will assist in integrating those engines with Amogy’s unique ammonia reforming technology. In 2023, Ballard will send Amogy the first batch of FCwave engines for maritime use. Following the successful conclusion of the initial projects, a follow-up order for an additional seven FCwave engines is anticipated.

A scalable fuel cell technology approved for use in marine conditions is Ballard’s FCwave engine. Utilizing proprietary ammonia cracking technology, Amogy’s ammonia-to-power platform enables the onboard extraction of hydrogen for use as fuel in a hydrogen engine. In order to scale the technology for usage in marine vessels, the Amogy team is presently developing designs for a tank barge and tugboat operations.

The International Maritime Organization has set aggressive emissions-reduction goals, such as a target to cut world fleet greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 and work toward a 70% reduction by 2050, compared to 2008 levels. Commercially viable zero-emissions ships must start joining world fleets if these objectives are to be met.
