APEX Group, a leading developer and operator of green hydrogen electrolysis plants, has set its sights on a groundbreaking hydrogen production project in Lubmin, Germany.

The company, a subsidiary of exceet Group SCA, plans to acquire and develop strategically important plots of land, with an ambitious goal of producing up to 43,000 metric tons of hydrogen annually using 100% green power. APEX has signed an agreement to acquire three crucial plots of land in Lubmin from EWN Entsorgungswerk für Nuklearanlagen GmbH. These plots of land, totaling around 5.2 hectares, are situated on the site of the decommissioned Greifswald nuclear power plant, offering ideal conditions for hydrogen production. The project aims to generate hydrogen with up to 600 MW of installed electrolyser capacity, making it a promising hub for the German hydrogen industry.

The Lubmin project’s significance lies in its potential to produce approximately 43,000 metric tons of hydrogen annually, leading to a reduction of more than 400,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. The electricity used in the production process will come from renewable sources in northern Germany, ensuring that the hydrogen is entirely green and contributes to Germany’s decarbonization efforts.

APEX’s Lubmin project is strategically located near offshore wind farms with a feed-in capacity of 1.5 GW, enabling a sustainable supply of renewable energy. The existing substation facilitates a connection to Germany’s high-voltage transmission grid. APEX’s partnership with the “Flow – making hydrogen happen” project also positions Lubmin as the northeast hub for a hydrogen pipeline network, enabling the transport of hydrogen across the country and, in the future, to southern Germany and Europe.

In addition to hydrogen production, APEX plans to construct a hydrogen filling station for heavy-duty trucks in the Lubmin industrial area. This complements the first-of-its-kind hydrogen filling station APEX already operates in Rostock/Laage. The company’s expertise and experience in building hydrogen refueling stations for buses and trains further demonstrate its commitment to expanding the hydrogen infrastructure.

APEX’s first construction phase investment amounts to around EUR 210 million, covering infrastructure development, feasibility studies, and planning services. While the project’s full revenues are expected after 2023, it reinforces APEX’s position as a national and international hydrogen supplier.
