Saudi oil company Aramco is sponsoring the first hydrogen-powered racing truck to compete in the Dakar Rally.

In order to power its 100 percent hydrogen-powered engine, the truck was designed by French zero-emission vehicle manufacturer Gaussin and comes equipped with tanks that can hold up to 80 kg of hydrogen.

“This is a milestone in the development of hydrogen as a lower-carbon fuel and the first time a hydrogen truck has entered the Dakar Rally,” said Ahmad A. Al-Saadi, senior vice president of technical services, at Aramco.

Saudi Arabia has hosted the Dakar Rally since its inception in 2020.

For on- and off-road hydrogen powered vehicles, Aramco recently announced that it had signed an agreement with Gaussin to build a modern Saudi Arabia manufacturing facility.
