The Wildegg-Brugg hydropower plant will house a hydrogen production facility planned by Axpo, and by the spring of 2024, it should be able to generate green hydrogen from domestic hydropower.

A portion of this environmentally friendly hydrogen will be piped directly to the nearby Voegtlin-Meyer filling station, aiding in the decarbonization of the transportation industry. The project’s building permit application was delivered.

Around 2000 tonnes of green hydrogen will be produced annually using electrolysis at Axpo’s proposed 15 MW hydrogen production facility in Wildegg-Brugg. The nearby Wildegg-Brugg run-of-river power plant will provide all of the electricity needed for production. Direct access to the power plant enables the production of hydrogen, which is more environmentally friendly. A new pipeline will carry some of the hydrogen to the nearby Voegtlin-Meyer filling station.

Voegtlin-hydrogen Meyer’s filling station will eventually offer green hydrogen to local users. IBB also intends to use the electrolysis-generated waste heat and supply this renewable energy to nearby industries.

Axpo, Voegtlin-Meyer, IBB, and the City of Brugg signed a joint memorandum of understanding in November 2021 to collaborate on the construction of the hydrogen production facility and the pipeline to the nearby filling station. 300 trucks or buses can be powered annually by the approximately 2000 tonnes of green hydrogen. Thus, the project will significantly lower CO2 emissions in the transportation industry.
