Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) and Black Hills Energy have secured a $16 million grant from the Wyoming Energy Authority to advance the development of a clean hydrogen generation facility with carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and sequestration.

This innovative project is set to unfold at Black Hills Energy’s Neil Simpson Power Plant in Gillette, Wyoming.

At the heart of this venture is B&W’s BrightLoop™ technology, a revolutionary approach to producing clean energy from coal while addressing the critical issue of CO2 emissions. The plant’s design is focused on utilizing BrightLoop, a patented chemical looping technology developed by B&W. This process is not only environmentally conscious but also holds the potential to redefine the landscape of hydrogen production.

The envisioned plant aims to produce 15 tons of clean hydrogen daily, showcasing the scalability and efficacy of the BrightLoop process. Central to the technology is its capability to not only generate hydrogen but also sequester or beneficially use CO2 emissions, contributing to the broader goals of sustainable and responsible energy practices.

The $16 million grant from the Wyoming Energy Authority is a testament to the state’s commitment to fostering technological advancements in the energy sector. Brandy Johnson, Chief Technology Officer at B&W, expressed gratitude for the support and emphasized the significance of this collaboration in shaping Wyoming’s clean energy future.

Having collaborated successfully on multiple projects, the partnership between B&W and Black Hills Energy is poised to reach new heights with this ambitious venture. The project aligns with Wyoming’s overarching efforts to leverage its abundant natural resources for clean energy production, underscoring the adaptability and versatility of B&W’s BrightLoop technology.

With the grant secured, the project is set to advance into the next phases, including engineering, construction, and eventual commercial-scale operation. The development of the clean hydrogen generation facility is poised to contribute not only to Wyoming’s energy industry but also to the larger landscape of clean energy solutions in the United States.

As the collaboration between B&W and Black Hills Energy unfolds, industry stakeholders and environmental advocates are keenly observing the potential of BrightLoop technology to pave the way for cleaner and more sustainable energy practices.
