Doosan Fuel Cell is using PEM (proton exchange membrane) technology to expand its fuel cell offerings into new land-based mobility applications.

Ballard Power Systems and Doosan’s fully owned North American subsidiary, HyAxiom, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles. The initial focus will be on FCEBs for the South Korean market, with further collaboration on other mobility markets being considered.

Ballard’s core PEM technology will be used in the powertrains of Doosan Fuel Cell and HyAxiom’s hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. This agreement brings together world-class companies to work on a turn-key solution for mobility customers, which includes the development, manufacture, and sale of PEM hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

The hydrogen bus business of Doosan Fuel Cell and HyAxiom will begin operations in 2023, with an initial focus on the South Korean market. FCEBs developed by HyAxiom are expected to be available in 2024.
