According to a plan released by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, the city of Beijing plans to have over 10,000 fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) on the road and 37 newly constructed hydrogen filling stations by 2025.

The plan outlines the particular objectives established by China’s capital for the growth of the country’s hydrogen energy industry. By 2025, the megacity aims to cultivate 10 to 15 worldwide leaders in the hydrogen energy industry chain, establish three to four world-class industrial R&D innovation platforms, and establish an industrial cluster for the manufacturing of hydrogen-related core components and equipment.

By 2025, the plan calls for the construction of a hydrogen energy industrial chain worth more than 100 billion yuan ($15.438 billion) and the reduction of 2 million tons of carbon emissions in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

In the medium term, Beijing has set an ambitious goal of having 37 hydrogen filling stations and 3,000 FCVs on the road by 2023. The value of the hydrogen energy industrial chain in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region should exceed 50 billion yuan ($7.645 billion) and carbon emissions should be reduced by 1 million tons.

The next Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing in 2022 are viewed as a significant opportunity to highlight the growth. On August 15, Beijing’s first hydrogen refueling station, which was created specifically for the 2022 Winter Olympics, was formally opened.
