The Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has solicited proposals for the installation of a 5 MW electrolyzer and related equipment for the production of green hydrogen and the blending of hydrogen with natural gas in the city gas distribution network.

The bid submission deadline is July 6, 2022. The bids will be opened on the same day they are received.

The municipal gas distribution network project envisions the sale of piped natural gas to residential, commercial, and industrial clients, as well as the sale of compressed natural gas to the car sector.

In one of its city gas distribution projects, Bharat Petroleum plans to deploy a 5 MW electrolyzer system to establish a green hydrogen production facility in a phased manner. The created green hydrogen will be combined with natural gas in the existing steel pipeline system.

Bharat Petroleum is investigating the idea of combining green hydrogen with natural gas in the city gas distribution networks of Ahmednagar and Aurangabad (Maharashtra).

The purpose of establishing a pilot project for the blending of hydrogen and natural gas is to examine the technical and commercial consequences of blending and substituting natural gas with green hydrogen.

Bidders must be reputable water electrolyzer firms producing the water electrolyzer system, firms with experience in hydrogen blending with natural gas, or engineering firms affiliated with a water electrolyzer technology firm.

The green hydrogen will be blended with natural gas in the city gas distribution network at a maximum of 2 percent by weight, subject to the technical requirements, safety, durability, and structural integrity of the existing natural gas pipeline system.

Bharat Petroleum would donate land near its network for the installation and commissioning of the system.

The unit should be entirely autonomous, appropriate for operation without human intervention, and equipped with safety controls. It must adhere to all applicable hydrogen generation unit standards, such as pressure vessel directions and hazardous area classification specifications.

In Maharashtra, Mahatma Phule Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Technology has solicited proposals to build, own, and manage a 1 MW green hydrogen plant with the related ecosystem.

Previously, Indian Oil Corporation Limited had launched a global request for proposals to build, own, and operate green hydrogen generation facilities at its Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, and Panipat, Haryana, refineries.
