BHI (Bureau Veritas Korea) has inked a comprehensive business agreement (MOU) with Uljin-gun, marking a significant leap towards the establishment of the ‘Uljin Nuclear Hydrogen National Industrial Complex’.

The ceremony witnessed the participation of key government agencies, including the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Korea Land and Housing Corporation, along with several major domestic companies.

BHI’s strategic partnership with Uljin-gun aims to position the company at the forefront of ‘nuclear hydrogen’ production, often referred to as ‘pink hydrogen’. This cutting-edge hydrogen production method involves harnessing the electricity and high heat generated by operating nuclear power plants to produce clean hydrogen. BHI sees nuclear hydrogen as a pivotal component of the next-generation hydrogen landscape, emphasizing its efficiency compared to existing clean hydrogen production methods.

Nuclear hydrogen stands out as an efficient method, particularly when high-temperature water electrolysis is employed using steam and electricity from nuclear power plants. BHI highlights the significant reduction in energy requirements for heating and water electrolysis in this process. The company underscores the synergy potential with the solid oxide water electrolysis method (SOEC), enhancing overall efficiency and sustainability.

Uljin, boasting a nuclear power plant cluster with seven operational nuclear power plants and an additional three units, sets the stage for the ambitious Uljin Nuclear Hydrogen National Industrial Complex. The envisioned project aims to leverage this substantial nuclear power infrastructure to produce clean hydrogen on a large scale. The strategic location aligns with plans to supply clean hydrogen to major consumers such as POSCO Steel Mill and Ulsan Petrochemical Complex, contributing to the revitalization of the national hydrogen industry.
