VERBUND has selected Fluence Energy GmbH to deliver over 92 MW of battery-based energy storage systems, bolstering both grid reliability and market responsiveness.
The new systems—50 MW/100 MWh in Weißenthurm-Kettig, Rhineland-Palatinate, and 42.9 MW/86.5 MWh in Elsterberg-Coschütz, Saxony—will be delivered using Fluence’s modular architecture. The deployment marks a significant expansion of VERBUND’s energy storage footprint in Germany, where it already operates 110 MW/130 MWh of capacity across more than a dozen sites.
Energy storage has become essential to absorbing the variability of wind and solar power, particularly as Germany phases out baseload coal and nuclear. Grid operators increasingly rely on fast-response battery systems to deliver ancillary services like frequency regulation and voltage support, especially during periods of extreme weather or renewable surges. These new VERBUND-Fluence systems are designed to inject and absorb power with precision, mitigating stress on upstream infrastructure and reducing the need for costly grid reinforcements.
Beyond technical performance, project viability now hinges on meeting evolving German regulations. Fluence’s selection was due not only to its 750 MW track record of deployed or in-construction capacity in Germany, but also its experience navigating stringent standards for noise abatement, cybersecurity, and permitting. In the Weißenthurm-Kettig project, for instance, Fluence submitted a detailed noise report to meet local zoning requirements—a key factor given Germany’s increasing scrutiny of acoustic emissions near residential areas.
From a commercial standpoint, the storage systems are structured to participate in both balancing energy and intraday power markets. VERBUND will oversee operational management and market participation through its proprietary trading algorithms, which optimize bidding strategies across various revenue streams. The ability to dynamically shift between markets enhances profitability while supporting broader grid efficiency.
