Bombora conducted a metocean survey off the northern coastline of Lanzarote’s Spanish Canary Island, making a significant step in the renewable energy aspirations of the island and the development of a 3.0MW wave park project.

The obtained data will provide the site with the essential physical and environmental characteristics to progress to the design and construction process.

In 2022, 3.0MW of power generation will be constructed in the first phase of the project. The project is currently going through the planning and consent process.

The data from the survey will be analyzed as part of a wave energy prediction to confirm the suitability of the site and to measure the annual energy production from the Bombora’s patented mWave, which sits invisibly under the ocean surface harnessing the energy of the waves above.

mWave provides an optimum solution to help Lanzarote and other Islands in the Canaries decarbonize its electricity supply as well as create a new industry for the local economy. I have met with a number of local suppliers and contractors who are keen to help support this innovative shift in the energy mix in the Archipelago.”

Rory van Weerdenburg, Project Manager at Bombora.

Together with strategic partner Enzen Spain, Bombora is part of a partnership that responds to the decarbonization plan of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, the governing body of the Spanish Canary Islands.

The Bombora solution is ideal as it meets two fundamental goals of the project to deliver power from sustainable, renewable sources and have minimal visual impact. Bringing new innovations to reality is a core part of Enzen’s DNA in delivering outcomes for our customers.”
