For a hydrogen production unit at its Kwinana biorefinery in Western Australia, British Petroleum (bp) has awarded French Technip Energies a contract valued between $50 million and $250 million. This is in support of the proposed project to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and biodiesel from renewable feedstocks.

According to the deal, Technip Energies will use its proprietary SMR technology to engineer, acquire, and fabricate (EPF) a 33,000 normal m3/hour modularized hydrogen production unit. Hydrogen is used to convert biofeedstocks into biofuels like SAF and biodiesel. The unit will be able to create hydrogen using both natural gas and biogas created by the Kwinana biorefinery.

It is planned to work with the location’s ongoing import terminal operations as well as its future plans to produce green hydrogen, which are now being assessed. Kwinana Renewable Fuels is one of five international initiatives bp has planned for the production of biofuels.
