BP Boosts Castellón’s Energy Landscape with Green Hydrogen

British multinational oil company BP is spearheading the creation of Castellón Green Hydrogen, a pioneering project aimed at establishing a renewable hydrogen hub in Spain’s Castellón de la Plana refinery.

At the heart of BP’s initiative lies the mission to create an integrated energy hub, encompassing the entire value chain of renewable hydrogen production. Through strategic collaboration with public and private stakeholders, including the HyVal consortium, BP aims to spearhead a transformative shift towards green hydrogen, contributing to the region’s decarbonization goals and fostering economic growth.

The Castellón Green Hydrogen project is poised to revolutionize the region’s energy landscape, with plans underway to install a 25-megawatt electrolyzer in the refinery’s initial phase. This pilot experience will pave the way for the production of approximately 3,900 tons of renewable hydrogen annually, marking a significant reduction in CO2 emissions and setting the stage for further expansion.

With ambitious plans to ramp up electrolyzer capacity to 200 megawatts by 2027 and ultimately reach 2 gigawatts by 2030, BP’s investment underscores its commitment to driving sustainable energy solutions at scale. By harnessing the power of renewable hydrogen, BP aims not only to meet local industry demands but also to position Castellón as a key player in the global hydrogen market.

Despite significant progress, the project’s success hinges on navigating regulatory complexities and securing necessary approvals. BP emphasizes the importance of regulatory frameworks conducive to hydrogen production, urging the Spanish government to expedite the transposition of European directives. With regulatory clarity and access to European funds, BP’s vision for Castellón’s hydrogen hub can become a reality.

BP’s collaboration with industry stakeholders, including the Association of Manufacturers of Ceramic Frits, Glazes, and Colors (Anffecc), underscores its commitment to driving innovation and sustainability across sectors.
