BASF and bp have joined forces to implement BASF’s gas treating technology, OASE white, in bp’s proposed blue hydrogen facility, H2Teesside, located in Teesside, UK.

H2Teesside aims to emerge as one of the United Kingdom’s largest blue hydrogen production facilities, with a targeted capacity of 1.2 gigawatts (GW) of hydrogen production by 2030. Blue hydrogen, derived from natural gas, is a promising avenue for hydrogen production, with the added benefit of capturing and storing the resulting CO2 emissions. This aligns with the UK Government’s ambitious target of achieving 10 GW of hydrogen production by the same year, signifying a significant stride towards carbon neutrality in the energy sector.

BASF’s OASE white technology, renowned for its efficiency and reliability, is poised to play a pivotal role in optimizing the blue hydrogen production process at H2Teesside. The innovative gas treating technology boasts a remarkable CO2 capture rate of up to 99.99%, making it a frontrunner in carbon capture solutions. By employing an amine-based solvent agent, the OASE® white process efficiently absorbs CO2 from the gas stream, facilitating its separation and subsequent storage, while the solvent agent is recycled for further use, ensuring sustainability and resource efficiency.

The integration of BASF’s OASE® white technology in H2Teesside holds immense potential to significantly mitigate CO2 emissions associated with hydrogen production. With the capacity to capture approximately two million tonnes of CO2 annually, the project promises to make substantial strides towards carbon neutrality, thereby contributing to the UK’s broader climate objectives. Furthermore, the initiative positions Teesside as a burgeoning hydrogen hub, fostering regional economic growth and catalyzing the UK’s transition to a low-carbon hydrogen economy.
