The Hydrogen Business Model (HBM) and Net Zero Hydrogen Fund have received a bid from bp for their proposed large-scale green hydrogen facility, HyGreen Teesside (NZHF).

The HMB and NZHF both aim to establish a low-carbon hydrogen economy in the UK and aid in business growth. Four new Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) regarding the usage of green hydrogen in enterprises and communities were also established by the company.

HyGreen Teesside, a green hydrogen facility being built by bp, has the potential to be one of the largest in the UK. With an initial planned phase of installed hydrogen production capacity of 80MWe, the plant targets output by 2025. HyGreen Teesside is seeking to provide up to 5% of the UK’s 10GW hydrogen target by 2030, when its planned growth of up to 500MWe is attained. This might help the UK achieve its net-zero aspirations.

The low-carbon hydrogen produced by the green hydrogen plant will be sufficient to power 10,000 heavy-duty trucks, making Teesside the first significant hydrogen transport hub in the UK.

The company also announced the signing of four new Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) with local firms for the prospective usage of green hydrogen in workplaces and communities, adding to the previous two MoUs.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with Northern Gas Networks (NGN), positioning bp as the chosen provider for the majority of the hydrogen to NGN’s Hydrogen Village in Redcar starting in 2025. This entails changing the gas supply for about 2,000 houses and businesses in certain parts of Redcar to clean-burning hydrogen.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was also signed with Ensus, the owner of Wilton on Teesside’s largest renewable ethanol production facility in Europe. This would make it possible for natural gas to be replaced with hydrogen produced by bp’s projected hydrogen plant in Teesside at the ethanol manufacturing facilities. The MoU with Ensus shows that there is a need for hydrogen from industries that are challenging to regulate.

Tees Valley Lithium signed an MoU with bp on the possible use of hydrogen to assist its goal of producing the lowest carbon lithium hydroxide, and it also wants to construct one of Europe’s first lithium hydroxide processing facilities. This will help decarbonize the production of electric vehicle (EV) batteries in Europe.

For the delivery of green hydrogen to investigate decarbonization alternatives for certain of its assets at Wilton International on Teesside, a new MoU with Sembcorp Energy UK was inked.

CF Fertilizer and Venator previously agreed to MoUs regarding the prospective supply of low-carbon hydrogen from HyGreen Teesside or bp’s H2Teesside CCUS-enabled hydrogen facility. Bp’s objective of developing a low-carbon hydrogen center in the Northeast of England is supported by the company’s planned hydrogen facilities and growing customer interest.

Masdar, an Abu Dhabi-based provider of renewable energy, and bp earlier this year signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together on the HyGreen Teesside hydrogen project. In order to aid the project, bp has also launched a number of green skills projects in Teesside. This includes money for the brand-new Clean Energy Education Hub at Redcar and Cleveland College, which will help provide chances for the community to enhance their green skills.
