Buckeye Partners, which revealed plans in May to buy the former Bear Head LNG facility at Point Tupper, Nova Scotia on Canada’s east coast, has completed the acquisition and that the project would be repurposed to produce green hydrogen and ammonia for domestic and export markets.
“Buckeye’s intention with this acquisition is to develop a large-scale green energy production, distribution and export hub,” Buckeye CEO Todd Russo said. “Given the project’s unique features and the geographic advantages of the region, including its status as one of the top locations globally for wind energy generation, we believe that this has the potential to become one the world’s premier green hydrogen production facilities.”
The project, now known as Bear Head Energy, will bring together partners from the on-shore and off-shore renewable energy businesses to construct a huge green hydrogen center for Atlantic Canada. Buckeye eventually hopes to create 2 GW of electrolyzer capacity at the location.
Bear Head LNG was intended to be an 8 million metric ton/year natural gas liquefaction and export terminal, but it ran into a variety of logistical and financial issues along the way. It was a sibling project to Magnolia LNG in the United States, which was acquired in administration by the Glenfarne Group from Australia’s LNG Limited.
