The Aurora project involves BKK, Air Liquide, and Equinor working together to develop a full liquid hydrogen supply chain for the maritime industry.
The Aurora project entails the construction of a new liquid hydrogen (LH2) production facility near an Equinor refinery in Mongstad, Norway.
The partners will distribute LH2 from Mongstad through western Norway in collaboration with Wilhelmsen’s planned liquid hydrogen-powered “Topeka” ro-ro vessels. Aurora expects to generate 6 tonnes of renewable LH2 per day from electrolysis in total. This is expected to meet the LH2 needs of western Norway in 2024-2026, while also paving the way for increased output to meet future demand.
The Aurora project began in 2019 and has now completed the pre-engineering process. The Aurora project aims to make liquid hydrogen viable for commercial shipping by early 2024, pending the Investment decision.
