Burgenland Energie, a leading energy company, is taking a significant step towards energy independence and climate neutrality with the introduction of a hydrogen pilot plant in Neusiedl am See.

The project, developed in collaboration with Research Burgenland, aims to enhance the existing Power2heat system by integrating a hydrogen production facility powered by renewable electricity. The pilot plant, set to begin operation in the coming days, will serve as a demonstration facility for critical research and pave the way for a larger hydrogen project planned for the Nickelsdorf and Zurndorf region by 2026.

Hydrogen, a versatile and clean energy carrier, has emerged as a key solution for storing surplus renewable energy and enabling seasonal energy transfers. With Burgenland’s abundant solar and wind energy resources, hydrogen production holds the potential to play a significant role in achieving energy self-sufficiency and bolstering the region’s climate and energy strategy. Klaus Maras, Managing Director of Burgenland Energie Energy GmbH, highlights the importance of hydrogen production in their pursuit of greater energy independence.

The pilot-scale hydrogen plant has a production capacity of 1.8 Nm³/h and generates waste heat at 45°C, which can be utilized by the heat pump system. The hydrogen is temporarily stored in gas cylinders before being converted back into electricity using fuel cells during periods of low wind availability. One of the remarkable aspects of the project is its full integration into the energy node control system in Neusiedl, which includes a biomass heating plant, district heating network, and the Power2Heat system. This integration allows for in-depth research on the optimization and interaction of various energy sources within the network, enabling valuable insights for future large-scale hydrogen systems.

The Neusiedl am See municipality has been actively pursuing sustainable energy initiatives, such as equipping municipal buildings with photovoltaic systems and transitioning to energy-efficient LED lighting. The introduction of the hydrogen pilot plant further strengthens the energy hub in Neusiedl, allowing the utilization of solar and wind resources for hydrogen production. Mayor Elisabeth Böhm emphasizes the significance of this project in harnessing the power of sun, wind, and hydrogen to meet the energy needs of the community.

While the technology behind hydrogen production is well-known, real-world implementation presents unique challenges. By operating the pilot plant, researchers will gain valuable insights into the practical aspects of hydrogen production, integration into existing networks, and potential optimization opportunities. These findings will inform the larger hydrogen project planned for the region, solidifying Burgenland’s commitment to climate neutrality by 2030 and establishing a foundation for future energy self-sufficiency.

The introduction of the hydrogen pilot plant in Burgenland marks a pivotal moment in the region’s transition towards clean, sustainable energy. Through innovative research, collaboration, and the utilization of renewable resources, Burgenland is paving the way for a future powered by hydrogen.
