Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) is set to unleash its groundbreaking BrightLoop technology. The innovative process not only generates hydrogen from diverse feedstocks but also captures carbon dioxide (CO2) for reuse, paving the way for a greener energy landscape.

Babcock & Wilcox, a prominent name in energy and environmental solutions, has emerged as a beacon of sustainable innovation with its revolutionary BrightLoop technology. The recent agreement between B&W and General Hydrogen, a subsidiary of CGI Gases, signifies a groundbreaking leap in the pursuit of net-negative carbon emissions hydrogen.

Under the terms of this strategic partnership, B&W will provide up to 15 tonnes of hydrogen per day from its biomass-fueled facility in Louisiana to General Hydrogen. In a synchronized move, CGI Gases will procure and transport compressed carbon dioxide captured during the hydrogen production process.

At the heart of this game-changing collaboration lies B&W’s BrightLoop technology. This technology is designed to transcend the limitations of conventional hydrogen generation by allowing the production of hydrogen from a wide range of feedstocks. This flexibility not only ensures a diverse and sustainable hydrogen supply but also opens doors for the utilization of various organic resources.

A distinctive feature of the BrightLoop™ process is its dual functionality. Alongside hydrogen production, the technology efficiently captures isolated CO2 streams. This captured CO2 can be repurposed, utilized, or sequestered, further contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions. Moreover, the process yields nitrogen, which, when combined with hydrogen, can be harnessed to create ammonia—a versatile compound with applications across industries.

Joe Buckler, Senior Vice-President of Clean Energy and B&W, emphasizes that this collaboration positions B&W as a pivotal player in generating net-negative carbon emissions hydrogen. The potential applications of this innovative approach span across multiple sectors, including power generation, industrial processes, and transportation fuel. The partnership thus presents a holistic and impactful solution to address the pressing challenges of carbon emissions and energy sustainability.

The agreement with General Hydrogen Corp. and CGI Gases marks a geographical expansion for both entities. Eileen Zullo, President and CEO of CGI Gases, underscores the transformative potential of B&W’s BrightLoop™ technology, noting that it aligns seamlessly with CGI Gases’ commitment to clean energy distribution and its extensive network across the United States.

The journey of BrightLoop is underscored by collaboration and innovation. The partnership between Babcock & Wilcox and Chart Industries, announced in December 2022, amplifies the technology’s prowess. By incorporating integrated hydrogen liquefaction and cryogenic carbon capture equipment, this alliance enhances the technology’s efficiency and potential impact.

Through this joint effort, the two American companies are not only advancing their technological portfolios but also steering the energy industry toward a more sustainable and resilient future.

As the world grapples with the imperative of sustainable energy solutions, B&W’s BrightLoop stands as a testament to engineering ingenuity. Its ability to generate hydrogen while concurrently capturing CO2 underscores the potential to address two critical challenges—reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering hydrogen-based economies.

With B&W’s technology poised for operation in 2026, the horizon of clean energy beckons. As industries and societies transition to cleaner fuel sources, BrightLoop illuminates a path towards a more sustainable energy landscape—a journey where innovation, collaboration, and conscious engineering converge.
