In a recent interview, Ivette Vera-Perez, the President and CEO of the Canadian Hydrogen Association (CHA), shed light on the bright future of Canada’s hydrogen industry. With a rich history in hydrogen research and development and strong government support, Canada is well-positioned to become a significant player in the global hydrogen economy.

WATCH THE FULL INTERVIEW HERE

Vera-Perez highlighted Canada’s pioneering role in hydrogen technology, tracing its roots back to Alexander Stewart’s early work on electrolysis in 1905. Since then, Canadian companies like Ballard Power Systems and Hydrogenics have continued to push the boundaries of innovation.

The Canadian government has also demonstrated its commitment to the hydrogen sector. The Canadian Hydrogen Strategy, launched in 2020 and recently updated in 2024, outlines a roadmap for the industry’s growth. The newly legislated investment tax credit is also expected to stimulate further investment in hydrogen projects.

Despite the positive outlook, Vera-Perez acknowledges the challenges that lie ahead. Addressing both supply-side and demand-side barriers will require concerted efforts from all levels of government and the private sector. The CHA plays a crucial role in fostering collaboration and promoting the benefits of hydrogen energy.

Vera-Perez sees the country as an exporter of clean hydrogen technologies and a pioneer in developing novel applications for hydrogen.
