Canada’s Ambitious Hydrogen Strategy Canada has been keen to position itself as a leader in supplying green hydrogen fuel to Europe, particularly Germany.

This ambition stems from Germany’s intent to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, especially from Russia, and its commitment to decarbonizing its industries.

Several obstacles have emerged in realizing this vision. A significant wave of global inflation and mismatches in supply and demand are the main challenges hindering Canada’s plans to begin hydrogen exports to Germany by next year. Although a memorandum of understanding was established between the two countries in 2022, the green hydrogen facilities in Atlantic Canada are yet to commence operations. Additionally, Europe’s infrastructure is unprepared to handle the expected hydrogen imports.

Despite these hurdles, both Canada and Germany remain dedicated to their green hydrogen collaboration. A spokesperson from Natural Resources Canada, Michael MacDonald, described the original goals as ambitious. He mentioned that while initial shipments are close to the 2025 target, specific details such as timing, quantity, or pricing are not yet determined. Most Canadian initiatives are still in planning phases, with some moving into construction.
