A memorandum of understanding was signed by Carbonco, a decarbonization solutions provider founded by DL E&C, with Geumyang Green Power and the Electric Power Research Institute of Korea Electric Power Corporation for the advancement and commercialization of next-generation blue hydrogen production technology.
Each institution will jointly fund and contribute to the creation of 1MWth-class next-generation blue hydrogen production technology through this project. It is planned to use this technology in hydrogen power plants and to begin commercial production of blue hydrogen in earnest in 2026.
By this, it intends to pursue a number of commercialization strategies both domestically and internationally, including the introduction of hydrogen abroad and gas turbine co-fired power generation.
In the development of 1 MW next-generation blue hydrogen production facilities, Carbonco takes part in the comprehensive design. The conceptual design and business feasibility analysis of 200MW-class large-scale commercial next-generation blue hydrogen production facilities will also be carried out after the basic design and technical economic analysis of 10MW-class facilities.
The oxidation and reduction cycle reactions of metal elements are used in the KEPCO Research Institute’s next-generation blue hydrogen production process.
By the oxidation of metal materials with water and the reduction of carbon dioxide with methane, this method creates hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Contrary to the current blue hydrogen production technology, no extra carbon capture and hydrogen purification facilities, which are expensive and energy intensive to develop, are needed.
