CF Industries and NextEra sign MoU for green hydrogen project in Oklahoma

In order to create a zero-carbon intensity hydrogen project at CF Industries’ Verdigris complex in Oklahoma, the companies CF Industries and NextEra Energy signed a memorandum of understanding.

The proposed project calls for a jointly owned 100 MW electrolysis plant at Verdigris that would be powered by a specialised 450 MW renewable energy facility created by NextEra Energy (NEE). CF Industries (CF) would be the site’s sole off-taker of all of the site’s electrolyzers’ 100% zero-carbon green hydrogen production.

According to the companies, Verdigris’ ammonia plants would be debottled in order to make room for the green hydrogen, which would then be utilised to manufacture up to 100K tonnes of green ammonia annually.

The resulting green ammonia production, according to CF Industries (CF), “expects to support the transition of American agriculture to low- and zero-carbon fertilisers, helping to remove up to 130K metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions from the agriculture supply chain each year.”
