Chile has received ten offers for a tender to assist jumpstart green hydrogen generation as part of a national aim to become carbon neutral by 2050.
Enel Green Power, CAP, Engie, GNL Quintero (which is constructing a US$30 million project with Acciona), IMELSA Energa, Linde, Hydrogène de France, Sociedad de Inversiones Albatros, Air Liquide Chile, and the Copenhagen Infrastructure Energy Transition Fund all made offers, according to Corfo.
Northern Atacama and Antofagasta, central Valparaso, center-south Biobo, and far south Aysén and Magallanes have all proposed projects.
According to Corfo, the projects have an average electrolysis capacity of 20MW. According to the organization, the evaluation and awarding will take occur in the “coming months.”
“A roadmap will be mapped from these first projects that will facilitate the creation of future regulatory, normative, and infrastructure initiatives,” said Corfo CEO Pablo Terrazas.
By 2040, Chile wants to be a world-class producer and exporter of green fuel. Its advantages include excellent wind and solar resources and convenient port access, while its negatives include political risk and a greater distance from major consumption centers than some of its Asian and Oceanian competitors.
The tender would provide funding of up to $30 million to one or more projects that will install more than 10MW of renewable generation capacity for hydrogen production by the end of 2025.
According to the tender documents, Corfo has a total budget of US$50 million that will be disbursed starting in 2022. Both domestic and international players can obtain financing.
