MAE’s Volta project, located in the Antofagasta Region, stands as a testament to Chile’s commitment to sustainable development. With an estimated investment of US$2.5 billion, the project envisions the construction of a green hydrogen plant capable of producing 600,000 tons of green ammonia annually.

This green ammonia, divided into two production stages of 300,000 tons each, is expected to hit the market by 2027, targeting both local and international audiences.

Beyond production, Volta boasts significant environmental benefits. The project is projected to contribute to a substantial reduction of over 1 million tons of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to removing 200,000 combustion vehicles from the road. This environmental commitment extends to the project’s design, incorporating resource efficiency and circular economy principles. Notably, the water supply will utilize existing desalination plants and treated wastewater from Mejillones, contributing to the bay’s cleaning efforts.

The project’s impact extends beyond environmental benefits, generating approximately 1,700 jobs during construction and nearly 500 direct and indirect jobs upon completion. Additionally, MAE has prioritized community engagement throughout the development process, fostering participation and open communication with local authorities and residents.

Volta’s entry into the Environmental Impact Assessment System (EIA) marks a significant milestone for Chile’s green hydrogen and ammonia industry. This pioneering project positions Mejillones as a potential hub for clean energy production, not only within Chile but also across the region.
