Late in April, the China Classification Society (CCS) announced that it would work with a number of partners to develop China’s first fuel cell-powered public service vessel for use in the Yangtze River basin.

According to CCS, the ship has a total hydrogen storage capacity of 60kg and a total energy storage capacity of more than 1MWh, thanks to its fuel cell’s rated strength of 500kW.

It will achieve “zero emission” of sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and greenhouse gases, marking a new giant move forward in China’s application of key technologies for hydrogen fuel cell-powered ships, according to the company.

Meanwhile, the Interim Regulations on Technology and Inspection for Hydrogen Fuel Cell-Powered Ships and the Guidelines for the Survey of Hydrogen Fuel Cell-Powered Ships documents, which are scheduled to be completed in August 2021, are being shared by CCS.
