The first fuel cell ferry in India will be constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).

The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and Cochin Shipyard Limited recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to construct this hydrogen vessel, which would be operated in Varanasi after undergoing many tests in Kochi.

Eight hybrid electric ferries will be built, six for the state of Uttar Pradesh and two for the state of Assam, according to the deal.

The Varanasi hydrogen ship can accommodate 100 passengers and will have effective air conditioning. Every year, 250 MT of carbon dioxide will be saved by this new zero-emission boat.
