The foundation for the converter station in Emden/East, part of the TenneT’s DolWin6 grid connection project, has been laid.

The laying of the time capsule with coins marked the start of the construction, with only a couple of people attending, due to restrictions imposed by Covid-19 pandemic.

DolWin6 is a 900 megawatt high voltage direct current connection.

The wind power produced offshore will be fed as three-phase current to a converter platform, where it will be converted into direct current and transported a total of 90 kilometres to the converter station in Emden. Here the electricity will be converted back into three-phase current and fed into the extra-high voltage grid via the substation. 

Siemens was hired to build the converter station, while Nexans will deliver the cables connecting the offshore platform to the station on land.

DolWin6 is one of the three current offshore grid connection projects that TenneT is currently implementing. Twelve network connections are already in operation. TenneT is thus providing offshore wind capacities of 7,132 megawatts.

TenneT plans to commission DolWin6 connection in 2023.
