Railway operator CPKC, in collaboration with ATCO EnPower, has completed the construction of two hydrogen fueling stations in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta.

These new terminals are designed to support CPKC’s expanding fleet of hydrogen-powered locomotives, a key effort in reducing carbon emissions in rail transportation. CPKC Assistant Vice President, Kyle Mulligan, highlighted these facilities’ role in progressing hydrogen locomotive testing and promoting a lower-carbon future in transportation.

ATCO EnPower played a pivotal role in the project, delivering services for the engineering, procurement, and construction of these dedicated hydrogen refueling stations. They have also committed to managing the operation of these sites. Each station is equipped with a 1-megawatt electrolyzer, along with systems for compression, storage, and dispensing of hydrogen fuel for locomotives. In a move towards sustainability, the Calgary facility utilizes renewable electricity partly generated from a nearby 5 MW solar power installation at CPKC’s headquarters.

The development of these fueling sites serves as a prototype for future hydrogen projects across Canada. By leveraging hydrogen technology, CPKC aims to establish a greener, more effective freight transportation model that could set a standard within the rail industry, with significant support from ATCO EnPower.
