Pyeongtaek, Namyangju, Dangjin, Boryeong, and Gwangyang Pohang are among the six local governments that have been chosen as “hydrogen cities” locations.

The creation of hydrogen cities will be actively promoted in six local governments in addition to the current pilot cities, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport stated on the 9th. The budget for this project is 5.25 billion won (500 million won for safety and project management is excluded this year).

In order for hydrogen energy sources to be used in apartments, buildings, and transportation facilities, it is necessary to construct urban infrastructure such as hydrogen production facilities, transportation facilities (pipelines, tube trailers, etc.), and utilization facilities (fuel cells, etc.).

In Ulsan, Jeonju, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Infrastructure intends to build a hydrogen city by the end of 2019. To create hydrogen infrastructure, three cities in Wanju and Ansan have been chosen as pilot cities. The pilot project, which got underway despite challenges like institutional and technical limitations, poor local approval, and economic viability, is anticipated to produce full-scale results starting next year.

From the next year, Pyeongtaek, Namyangju, Dangjin, Boryeong, Gwangyang, and Pohang, among others, will take part in the effort to create hydrogen cities. Over the course of four years, each local government will spend 40 billion won (20 billion won for national expenses and 20 billion won for local expenses). The development of the hydrogen city will get 10.5 billion won (half from the government and half from municipal expenses) in the following year.

In order to develop a hydrogen port, a specialized complex for producing blue hydrogen, and a specific water consumption zone, Pyeongtaek Taxi will be marketed as a carbon-neutral hydrogen complex zone centered on Pyeongtaek Port. Hydrogen fuel cells will be put in residences and commercial buildings in free economic zones using the hydrogen produced in the hydrogen specialized complex, and hydrogen charging stations will be constructed at the hydrogen transportation complex base. 15km of hydrogen pipelines and integrated safety operating centers will be constructed from hydrogen production facilities, transportation complex bases, ports, and hydrogen fuel cells.

In order to develop a distinct hydrogen economic hub and self-sufficient city, Namyangju City will build hydrogen city infrastructure in the third phase of the new city. In addition to constructing integrated safety operating centers and 5km of hydrogen pipes, the new city will also install hydrogen fuel cells in public housing, public buildings, and sporting and cultural venues. Organic waste from the city will be used to build green hydrogen production facilities, and the resource circulation complex will include biogas-based hydrogen production facilities.

The idea of a livable clean hydrogen city was suggested by Dangjin City. The location of Korea’s largest coal-fired power plant, steel mill, projected LNG facility, and Dangjin Port provides favorable conditions for the generation and use of hydrogen. The construction of a 7.5 km hydrogen pipeline, an integrated safety operating center, a hydrogen energy promotion hall, and a green hydrogen production demonstration using organic waste resources like livestock manure are all planned.

In order to support the building of the largest blue hydrogen value chain in the world connected to the Boryeong LNG Terminal, Boryeong City, South Chungcheong Province, and associated businesses have invested a total of 5 trillion won. Infrastructure for hydrogen cities should be built, including an integrated safety operation center and an 8-kilometer hydrogen pipeline. The refrigeration and heat specialist project complex will have hydrogen fuel cells installed, and a green hydrogen production demonstration complex employing organic waste materials, like cattle manure, will also be built.

By constructing a hydrogen-only port terminal, Gwangyang City put forth a vision of a city that would be a hub for the hydrogen economy. To build a hydrogen-based public transportation system, hydrogen buses, hydrogen cleaning trucks, and hydrogen charging stations will be built. A 19km hydrogen pipeline and integrated safety operation center will also be built. Hydrogen fuel cells will also be installed in condominiums and swimming pools. In order to exhibit hydrogen tractors and hydrogen drones in Gwangyang Port, promote a water mobility-specific project.

In the Blue Valley Industrial Complex, Pohang City is also working on a preliminary feasibility assessment for a foundation-building project for the hydrogen fuel cell sector. In order to produce green hydrogen, we will demonstrate water electrolysis hydrogen production facilities in the Blue Valley Industrial Complex while also building infrastructure for the hydrogen city, such as a 15.4-kilometer hydrogen pipeline and an integrated safety operation center.
