Cyient to Deliver Engineering for Norway’s First Green Hydrogen Maritime Bunkering Facility

As Norway accelerates its green maritime ambitions, a new hydrogen production and distribution facility in Bodø has entered its next development phase with Indian engineering firm Cyient tapped for core technical responsibilities.

The project, part of a joint venture between GreenH and German asset manager Luxcara, is set to supply green hydrogen to the Vestfjorden ferry route operated by Torghatten Nord AS under a long-term fuel agreement.

The hydrogen facility at Langstranda, now under construction as of late 2024, is designed to serve both maritime and heavy transport sectors, reinforcing Norway’s strategic decarbonization priorities. With maritime transport accounting for a sizable share of national emissions—roughly 6.6% of the country’s total according to Statistics Norway—the successful deployment of low-emission hydrogen fuel is a critical component in reaching the government’s 2030 climate targets.

Cyient, headquartered in Hyderabad, India, has been contracted to deliver owner’s engineering and detailed plant engineering services. The company will support the full lifecycle of the project—from detailed design to procurement support and installation engineering. With a background in balance-of-plant (BoP) design for renewable projects, including green hydrogen infrastructure, Cyient will aim to optimise system efficiency and cost-effectiveness throughout execution.

The Bodø plant is not only intended for hydrogen production, but also for direct bunkering—making it one of the first maritime hydrogen refueling stations of its kind globally. Hydrogen for the project will be sourced from renewable power, aligning with the EU and Norway’s joint commitments under the European Green Deal and Fit for 55 package.

While exact production capacity for the Bodø plant has not been disclosed, its role in fuelling the high-traffic Vestfjorden ferry route marks it as a significant benchmark in the region’s shift toward zero-emission maritime operations. With operations scheduled to ramp up through 2025 and beyond, the Bodø hydrogen facility will likely serve as a real-world test case for hydrogen-fueled marine transport in high-latitude environments, where reliability and redundancy in fuel systems are paramount.
