Norwegian companies Dalane Energi and Hydrogen Solution (HYDS) have marked a significant milestone in the country’s green energy transition with the inauguration of a cutting-edge hydrogen production facility in Egersund harbor.
As part of the EU-funded ROBINSON H2020 project, this venture represents a crucial step towards achieving sustainability goals while revolutionizing the maritime industry.
The official opening ceremony, held at the Grand Hotell Eigersund on February 8, witnessed the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Norwegian Minister of Industry Jan Christian Vestre. This event underscored the strategic importance of the facility in driving Norway’s renewable energy agenda forward.
This pioneering facility, the first of its kind in Rogaland, harnesses renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen for commercial use. Construction was completed in 2023, with Danish company Green Hydrogen System delivering electrolyzers through its Norwegian partner, Liquiline. Once the ROBINSON project concludes in the fall of 2024, Dalane Hydrogen AS will assume control of the facility, ensuring its continued operation and contribution to Norway’s sustainable energy landscape.
The significance of this initiative extends beyond environmental stewardship, with profound implications for Egersund’s economic development and strategic positioning in the maritime sector. Idar Sønstabø, CEO of Dalane Energi, emphasized the potential of green hydrogen to unlock new opportunities and bolster Egersund’s status as a pivotal hub for the shipping industry.
However, despite the promise of green hydrogen, challenges such as scaling up production, ensuring cost competitiveness, and developing infrastructure remain pertinent. Nonetheless, initiatives like the Egersund hydrogen facility underscore Norway’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and leadership in the global energy transition.
