Dana Incorporated has created metallic bipolar plates specifically designed to maximise the performance and accelerate the commercialization of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers used to manufacture hydrogen fuel.
The integrated bipolar plates from Dana are constructed of steel or titanium, and the active area’s surface is treated with a variety of coatings. They also include integrated moulded sealing to avoid permeability at operating pressures of up to 50 bar, superior flow field design to increase stack efficiency, and decreased electrical losses.
By the end of 2023, the bipolar plates—which are currently undergoing prototype testing with major manufacturers of electrolyzers and electrolysis stacks—will be prepared for mass production.
