Belgium-based company DEME and Muscat-headquartered integrated energy group OQ are embarking on an extensive engineering endeavor for the Hyport Duqm project in Oman, which aims to establish a green hydrogen and ammonia facility.

This joint effort will encompass the construction of renewable power infrastructure and downstream facilities, as outlined in a press statement by DEME.

The consortium, having recently signed a project development agreement with Hydrom, an organization dedicated to advancing Oman’s national interest in green hydrogen, is now poised to commence detailed engineering work on the ambitious project. Hyport Duqm is set to occupy an expansive area of 150 square kilometers within the Special Economic Zone at Duqm.

The primary objective of Hyport Duqm is to generate wind power and solar energy, with an initial renewable power capacity of approximately 1.3 gigawatts (GW) during the project’s first phase. The capacity is projected to increase significantly to over 2.7 GW in the subsequent phase, as emphasized in the DEME statement. These renewable energy sources will serve as the foundation for the production of green ammonia and hydrogen.

During the first phase of the project, Hyport Duqm anticipates producing around 330,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, a volume that is poised to exceed 650,000 tonnes as the second phase comes to fruition. This substantial output of green ammonia and hydrogen has the potential to revolutionize Oman’s energy landscape, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.

The development of Hyport Duqm represents a significant stride towards achieving Oman’s sustainability goals. By capitalizing on the region’s abundant wind and solar resources, the project aims to bolster the country’s renewable energy capacity and enhance its energy independence. Moreover, the production of green ammonia and hydrogen offers diverse applications, ranging from fueling transportation systems to supporting industrial processes, enabling a cleaner and more sustainable future across multiple sectors.

The venture between DEME, a renowned global leader in offshore engineering and renewable energy, and OQ, a prominent player in the integrated energy market, demonstrates the collective commitment to driving innovation and advancing the adoption of green technologies. Through their expertise and collaborative efforts, the consortium is well-positioned to leverage cutting-edge engineering solutions and optimize the performance of the Hyport Duqm project.

The potential impact of Hyport Duqm extends beyond Oman’s borders. As green hydrogen and ammonia gain traction as viable alternatives to conventional energy sources, this ambitious project has the potential to become a cornerstone for the emerging green energy industry in the Middle East and globally. By showcasing the viability and scalability of green hydrogen and ammonia production, Hyport Duqm can inspire and catalyze similar initiatives in other countries, contributing to the wider adoption of sustainable energy solutions worldwide.

In conclusion, the collaboration between DEME and OQ for the Hyport Duqm project marks a significant milestone in Oman’s pursuit of sustainable energy development. With an extensive engineering plan in motion and an expansive area dedicated to renewable power generation, Hyport Duqm has the potential to become a leading green hydrogen and ammonia facility. This landmark project not only strengthens Oman’s commitment to green energy but also paves the way for a more sustainable and climate-resilient future, both within the country and beyond.
